Pandas, politics, football: Hong Kong plans anniversary

Hong Kong, the pearl of the east, is one of the two special administrative regions of the People's Republic of China. Comprising more than 260 islands, the territory is located on the eastern side of the Pearl River Delta, bordering Guangdong province in the north and facing the South China Sea in the east, west and south.

Using a blend of football, fireworks and pandas, Hong Kong is pulling out all the stops for the 10th anniversary of its return to Chinese rule, with thousands of guests anticipated for a series of celebrations.

Pro-democracy activists also aim to mark the anniversary in their own way, calling for as many people as possible to rally for an annual July 1 march to press for greater freedoms.
